Nature Observation 1 - Max


The plant looked away towards the light that shown through its leaves. Bundled around its center, the wiry branches softly reached beyond its roots and into the serene air. It sat unmoving except through consequence of ambient vibrations. The top of each leaf contained muted green veins that split into smaller vessels toward the tips like maps depicting interstates transitioning into country roads. Each vein raised itself from the surface, almost as if it was continuing the morphology of the branch from which it came. Underneath, a lighter green showed where the veins traveled, but its surface felt flush as a rock worn by years of wind and water.

Walking the Beaten Path (NJ1)

I stroll along the immaculate sidewalks of TCU’s campus slowing from my usual brisk pace to notice the environment surrounding me.   Slowly, I hear the cicada screams return to my perception.   I walk this same beaten path daily but am deaf to that familiar noise emitted from the trees on late summer evenings.   The noise is loud.   I glance to the trees making my ears vibrate.   I think I looked in the right direction, at least.   Surrounded by buildings, I noticed the sound reverberate and echo from one wall to the next, making it challenging to distinguish from which direction the sound originated.   Still, I looked at the tree.   Barely parting before returning to their original position, leaves shivered as if preparing for the cool months ahead. Productive Procrastination (NJ4)

A few nights ago, I returned to my room after a day of class, lab, and meetings. As I sat down at my desk, I reached over to turn on the little lamp in the corner. Hesitating, I instead stood, crawled across my bed, and opened the blinds allowing light to pour into the sleepy room. Sitting back down in my desk, I slipped my laptop out of my bag and placed it in front of me. I experienced the typical mental wrestling match between procrastination and productivity. Turning to peer through the blinds, the sky hinted hues of red and yellow. Clouds popped from the fading background color provided by the sun. After a few minutes, I justified to myself that a walk would serve myself better than hunching over my laptop in an attempt to cram information into my head. Something about walking is refreshing. Nature Observation 2 - Greens

The bush sat motionless in the silent night air.   From afar, its greenish gray shade seemed to evenly coat the outside of its structure.   It was a blob of color raised slightly off the ground, as if someone or something crouched and was frozen in position.   The bush rested behind an area of grasses and Asian jasmine sprawled across the ground.   The bush could almost resemble an assemblage of the Asian jasmine if the Asian jasmine clumped together, grew taller, and retained a specific shape.   Surrounded by smaller plants, the bush stood powerfully, and its dense leaves and branches allowed the viewer to see only an inch into its interior. On closer inspection, a spectrum of green color covered the bush, not just the greenish gray I had seen previously.   The distance at which I analyzed its components created a range of different impressions.   In fact, by looking independently from long-distance, middle-distance, and up close...
